Mindful eating and hunger signals

Fullness signals take about 20 minutes to reach your brain. Speed is why we overeat.

The 20-minute lag

Stretch receptors in the stomach and gut hormones like CCK and GLP-1 need time to register a meal. Eating quickly means you can finish far more than you need before the signal arrives.

Hunger vs appetite

Physical hunger builds gradually and is satisfied by any food. Appetite is triggered by sight, smell, stress or boredom and is specific โ€” it wants that particular thing. Naming which one you're feeling changes the choice.

Simple practices

Put the fork down between bites, eat without a screen for one meal a day, and pause halfway through to rate your fullness from one to ten. These reliably reduce intake without restriction.

Key takeaways

  • Fullness signals lag about 20 minutes behind eating.
  • Distinguish physical hunger from triggered appetite.
  • Slowing down reduces intake without any rules.
