Habit stacking beats willpower

Behaviour change fails on motivation and succeeds on design. Anchor new habits to existing ones.

Motivation is a wave

Motivation reliably fades. Systems don't. The people who sustain change build environments where the healthy choice is the easy default rather than a daily decision.

The stacking formula

After [existing habit], I will [new habit]. 'After I pour my morning coffee, I will log my breakfast.' The existing routine becomes the cue, so you don't rely on remembering.

Make it two minutes

Shrink the new habit until it takes under two minutes. Scanning one meal beats intending to track everything. Consistency compounds; intensity burns out.

Key takeaways

  • Anchor new habits to existing routines.
  • Shrink the habit until it takes under two minutes.
  • Design your environment instead of relying on willpower.
